The story of the woman at the well follows on the heels of the account of Jesus interaction with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and prominent member of the Jewish Sanhedrin ( John 3:121 ). This is hard to do, but if we are going to tell them that God loves them, it might be a good idea to let God demonstrate that love through us from the start.
